adult acne

Going through acne breakouts during your teen years is traumatic enough, but having to go through it again as an adult can be downright miserable. Unfortunately, many women will experience adult acne. The problem is what may have worked to clear your skin as a teen may no longer work now that you are an adult. And adding insult to injury, those treatments may actually make your acne worse.

Here are three tips that can help you combat adult acne if you are one of the many adults dealing with this very frustrating condition.

1. Evaluate Your Hair and Skin Care Products

If you have adult acne, you should look at the labels on your hair and skin care products, including soaps, shampoos, face wash, moisturizers, sunscreen, and makeup. Some products have ingredients that can worsen acne symptoms. All these products should include at least one of the following on their labels:

  • Oil-free
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Won’t clog pores
  • Non-acnegenic

2. Clean Up Your Diet

A recent study from the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology found that adults with acne tend to consume more dairy products than those who do not suffer from the condition. People who consume more sweets like pastries, soda, and chocolate were also found to be more prone to developing adult acne.

3. Speak to Your Doctor

Acne in adults can be caused by so many things. If you take medications, speak with your doctor to determine if your acne could be a possible side effect. It may be possible for your doctor to change your prescription. A major cause of adult acne is a hormone imbalance, and your doctor may be able to address the problem.
