Did you know that some of the skin care advice you’re getting might actually be harmful myths? Here are five of the most common “tips” that might actually be causing more harm than good.
This is a common skin care myth, because hot water can swell the outer layers of your skin and make your pores appear to be more open. Your pores don’t really open in response to temperature, and hot water can actually cause damage to your skin. For the best results, wash your face with lukewarm water.
Makeup itself will not make you age faster. What really causes aging is not washing your face at the end of the day, letting an entire day’s worth of oils, dirt, and miscellaneous toxins stay on your skin. You can wear makeup as much as you like, just don’t forget to remove it and wash your face before you go to bed.
Your makeup alone doesn’t offer enough protection against the sun. Not only are most makeup products rated by their UVA protection and not UVB, for all-day protection you would have to reapply your makeup several times throughout the day. So, while SPF makeup does help protect your skin, for complete protection you should also apply sunscreen.
While the type of moisturizer and the amount to use will vary according to your skin type, all skin types should be using a moisturizer of one kind or another. When you wash your face, it removes some of the natural oils that protect your skin. Oily skin does require the least amount of moisturizer, so you can select a lighter product – you don’t have to have a heavy cream to nourish and hydrate your skin.
This myth tends to impact those with oily skin the most, as they may tend to over-wash their face in an attempt to remove excess oils. Unfortunately, this can lead to skin sensitivity, irritation, and dryness. In some cases, the resulting dryness may even kick oil production into overdrive. For the best results, restrict washing your face to once or twice a day. It also helps to use a gentle, sulphate-free cleanser and avoid scrubbing your skin too harshly.
