Longer and fuller lashes have long been considered a universal symbol of beauty. Beyond their aesthetic function, lashes play a protective role by triggering the blink reflex and defending the eyes against debris. If you’re tired of applying coats of mascara to make your eyelashes look longer and fuller, Latisse might be the answer to your cosmetic prayers.
Latisse is a prescription eyelash solution that makes lashes and eyebrows grow longer, fuller, and darker. The cosmetic benefits of Latisse were accidentally discovered during a controlled trial on glaucoma patients. During the trial period, ophthalmologists and their glaucoma patients noticed the hair lengthening and darkening side effects that occurred over time.
In December 2008, the FDA approved Latisse as the first and the only option for the treatment of hypotrichosis of eyelashes. It is also considered by Board Certified Dermatologists as one of the must-have lash serums and enhancers.
Humans generally have between 100 and 150 eyelashes springing from each of their upper eyelids. Upper eyelashes are twice as numerous as lower eyelashes and are naturally arranged in two to three rows. Like scalp hair, eyelashes are terminal hairs. They spring, grow for a while, and fall out in due course. Though variable, the normal eyelash cycle is approximated to last from five to eleven months.
Latisse works by increasing the number of lash follicles that sprout and extending the growth period. It also appears to be capable of stimulating melanogenesis, which explains the change in the pigmentation of lashes that’s usually observed after use. Results of a 16-week study revealed that participants experienced a 25% increase in lash length, an 18% increase in lash darkness, and a 106% increase in lash fullness.
According to studies, Latisse is safe and well-tolerated with a low probability of adverse side effects. The safety of Latisse, when applied either dermally or as an eye drop, has been proven in many trials. You should note, however, that there are several side effects to look out for, which include eye pruritus and eye dryness.
With Christmas just around the corner, there’s no better time to embark on a magical lash quest than now. Applying once per day to the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of your eyelashes is guaranteed to give you initial results in as little as four weeks and increase overall eyelash prominence in 16 weeks.
