There has been a considerable amount of hype lately over the inexpensive dermarollers being sold all over the internet. They boast the ability to give you similar results to professional microneedling, however they differ in many ways. Most importantly is that at home dermarollers come with a whole host of risks.
Microneedling (or Collagen Induction Therapy) is the process of running a set of sharp and sterile ‘micro’ needles over the skin. The mild ‘trauma’ caused by microneedling to the skin encourages the body to repair itself and improves collagen production. This in turn can aid in the improvement of fine lines, wrinkles and stretch marks. Microneedling can be done on the face, as well as other areas of the body, such as the legs and stomach.
Dermarollers are essentially an ‘at home’ version of the microneedling procedure. These devices can range in price, but most are inexpensive, which is a red flag. The needles used in a microneedling session at a professional skin care clinic are high medical grade in strength and quality and completely sterilized. When you purchase a dermaroller elsewhere, more often than not you are receiving a product that was cheaply made and that isn’t always sterile. If you are using an at home device you can run the risk of having the cheaply made needles damage your skin, and even in some cases, the needles could break off in your skin. That risk, matched with the concern of the needles having never been properly sterilized, is reason enough to steer clear of this questionable trend.
One other major difference in dermarollers and microneedling treatments is that dermarollers are made with shorter needles. Since the needles on a dermaroller aren’t creating the same fine punctures, they don’t necessarily encourage the skin to repair itself, but instead can cause irritation to the surface level of the skin. Thus using a dermaroller instead of receiving a professional microneedling treatment won’t get you the same results.
