Pleasant as the summer sunshine is, it can be harsh on the skin. As you spend more time outdoors, your skin may develop some discoloration or begin to look a little dull. But we’ve got good news! You can reverse sun damage, restore your skin’s overall texture and tone, and refresh your look this season with an IPL Photofacial treatment.
A photofacial treatment involves a special non-ablative technology that emits intense pulsated light (IPL) to repair sun-damaged skin and other skin imperfections. The light, which is similar to a flash, is emitted in a series of intervals, wavelengths, and pulses. It penetrates through the second layer of skin and is absorbed by hyperpigmentation and abnormally dilated blood vessels without damaging the top layer of the skin. The body will then remove the damaged tissue, evening out and smoothening your skin tone.
To start your photofacial treatment, your esthetician will clean the treatment area and cover it with a cooling gel to keep you comfortable. You’ll be provided with dark glasses to protect your eyes from light radiation. During your treatment, you may feel some slight stinging or a snapping sensation from the IPL handpiece as the light waves penetrate your skin. An IPL treatment can take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on which area you’re having treated.
It’s worth noting that the treatment may give you a flushed appearance for the first few days. Dark spots may darken and broken capillaries may appear more obvious. Also, you may experience some redness and swelling for up to 48 hours after treatment.
Your results will gradually settle in as you complete the recommended series of treatments, which are spaced two to four weeks apart. Use lots of sunscreen and hydrating products to maintain your results.
