Do I Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Day?

May 16, 2018 | Sun Damage, Sunscreen

sunscreenDermatologists widely recommend wearing sunscreen every day, but this advice is not often followed. You may not realize it, but applying sunscreen on a daily basis has incredible benefits.

The dangers of sunlightThere are two harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight: UVA rays and UVB rays. Unprotected exposure to either ray can lead to skin cancer. Wearing sunscreen every day, even when it is cloudy, protects your skin from these rays and limits their damaging effects.

Protect your complexionWearing sunscreen can prevent brown spots and skin discoloration. It can be much harder to fix your skin once it is already damaged by the sun. Using sunscreen should keep your skin smooth and clear.

Prevent premature agingUV rays from the sun harm the fibers in your skin which leads to the formation of wrinkles. Applying sunscreen regularly slows down the development of lines and the appearance of premature aging.

Decrease the likelihood of skin cancerSkin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. UV radiation from the sun damages the skin’s cellular DNA and produces genetic mutations that lead to cancer. Wearing sunscreen every day limits the skin’s exposure to UV radiation and serves as a simple daily action that can make a huge difference in long term health.

Using sunscreen correctlyThe American Cancer Society recommends sunscreens with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Make sure to apply sunscreen to all areas of your skin that are not covered by clothes. Apply sunscreen to your skin before going outside and reapply approximately every two hours and after swimming or sweating, or per the directions on your sunscreen.
