Summer is almost here, and with it, all of the harsh sun that we experience in Arizona. While time outdoors in the sun has many health benefits, it is important to be mindful about protecting our skin during this summer season. Here are a few ways to make sure you are prepared to maintain healthy skin in the sunny months ahead.
We all know how important sunscreen is year-round, and particularly in the summer. Most of us apply sunscreen when we know we’re going to be spending some excess time outside; like a trip to the lake, or an outdoor event. Using a good SPF, especially on your face, is pivotal to healthy skin year-round. A good sunscreen should be water resistant, above SPF 15 (above SPF 30 is usually recommended for the face) and cover a broad spectrum of UV rays. SkinMedica offers a high-quality sunscreen that will ensure your skin stays protected. Apply sunscreen daily as part of your regular routine and reapply throughout the day while outdoors.
Having sun-kissed, glowing, healthy skin is a must during the summer, but laying out in the sun to tan can be damaging to the skin. Tanning beds are even worse, as they use more concentrated UV rays. Sunless tanning or self-tanner is the best way to get that bronzed look while making sure your skin stays healthy. Be aware that sunless tanning products are not sunscreens however, so you will still need to apply sunblock before going out in the sun.
Some products we use on a regular basis to maintain our skin can actually hurt us when we expose our faces to the sun after using them. This is especially true for many acne clearing products. Salicylic acids and other drying agents used in acne clearing products can over dry and cause irritation to our skin when met with the sun. Usually, a product will state on the packaging if it is unwise to use before sun exposure, but you always look up your product online or ask a skin care expert whether or not you should adjust when you use the product.
