Prevent Sun Damage This Spring

Sun_DamageAfter a cold winter season, the sun will be shining bright before we know it. While the spring sun in Arizona is not as intense as in the summer, it is just as important to protect your skin. Skin cancer and sun damage is more likely to develop after continuous unprotected exposure to the sun. Keep these tips in mind to avert brown spots, fine lines and wrinkles caused by the Sun:
Pass on indoor and outdoor tanning
If you fall victim to pale and pasty skin, you’re probably excited for the upcoming warmer seasons. But even with the vast information available on the dangers of tanning under artificial AND natural light, many women still choose to put their skin in harm’s way. Instead, opt for bronzers, tanning lotions or creams to give your appearance a summer glow without the risk.
Shield your skin
We hate to sound like a broken record, but we can’t stress the importance of sunscreen. Whether or not you are intentionally in the sun, you must, must, MUST use sunscreen with at least 15 SPF on a daily basis. Avoid exposing yourself to the sun between the peak hours for ultraviolet radiation (UV rays), which is typically between 10 am and 4 pm. When you do go out, try and seek shade, and don’t forget to wear protective clothing in addition to your sunglasses, like broad-rimmed hats, long sleeve shirts and longer pants.
Watch your diet
What you eat can actually prevent, treat AND contribute to damage caused by the sun. Yes, we said contribute. Meat, simple carbs, sugar, dairy products and processed foods trigger inflammation and can make sun damage worse. Look for foods that help your skin stay hydrated, like blueberries, salmon, dark chocolate and avocados. You will actually be helping your body inside and out.
