Retinol vs. Retin-A and Why You Should Use One

Sep 26, 2018 | Acne, Retin A, Retinol, Skin Care

Retinol and Retin-A may sound similar, but they are two very different skin treatments. Here is everything you need to know about the various advantages of Retinol and Retin-A.

Retinol— You’ve probably heard of retinol before, but do you really know what it is? Essentially, retinol is a derivative of retinolVitamin A. Retinol is added to a variety of skin creams because of its anti-aging and acne-clearing powers. The ingredient supports the production of collagen and the healthy renewal of skin cells, helping to prevent the development of fine lines and wrinkles.

Retin-A— Retin-A is also a skin cream component medication used to treat acne and wrinkles. Retin-A is essentially Vitamin A and is much stronger than Retinol, usually only found in prescription products. Retin-A also increases skin-cell turnover, stimulates the production of collagen, and increases blood flow in the skin.

Retinol vs. Retin-A— At this point, you’re probably wondering what is the actual difference? Clearly, Retinol and Retin-A have a lot in common. The main difference lies in the fact that Retin-A is a tretinoid (Vitamin A), is available by prescription, and is significantly stronger. Retinol, on the other hand, is only a derivative of Vitamin A. Retinol products typically include moisturizers and are better choices for sensitive or easily-irritated skin.

Which to Use— Both products have similar anti-aging and acne-fighting potential, but choosing the right product for your skin is important. Both Retin-A and Retinol can cause dryness and irritation, but Retinol is usually a safer bet for ultra-sensitive skin. Retinol is also conveniently available over-the-counter. The final decision ultimately lies in your individual skin conditions and goals.
