Men’s skin care— it’s definitely not a myth, and it shouldn’t be a mystery. Too many men regard “skin care routines” as for the girls, but they shouldn’t. Here are a few tips for understanding the finer points of men’s skin care and figuring out how to make the most of your skin care routine!
How is men’s skin care different from women’s? This may come as a surprise, but men’s skin is actually quite different than women’s. Men’s skin has more hair growth, is significantly thicker, and has larger oil glands. These differences mean that men’s skin requires slightly different treatments and care than women’s skin.
Basic skin care: cleanse, moisturize, and sunscreen— At least in some respects, men’s skin care is similar to women’s skin care. Men should cleanse twice a day to keep their skin clear. Just don’t get too enthusiastic with the cleansing—it’s definitely possible to cleanse too much. Moisturize your skin on a regular basis to minimize acne-causing bacteria, promote a healthy balance of oils, and to help your face stay smooth and hydrated. Protecting your skin from the sun is always necessary. Either wear sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection or put on a hat that shades your face.
Razors and aftershave— Using the right razor for your hair-type is an essential part of skin care. A razor with multiple blades can be great for a smooth shave for some men or be more likely to cause ingrown hairs and razor bumps for other men, especially those with very curly hair. Some aftershaves, specifically those that are alcohol based, will dry out your skin excessively. Other aftershaves, such as those that include a moisturizing element, will help prevent both scaly skin and ingrown hairs.
Consider combination products— If you’re hesitant to start applying a great number of products to your skin for the sake of a good skin care routine (and that’s completely understandable!), consider combination products. Moisturizer-sunscreens with skin fortifying antioxidants, for example, can provide all the things your skin needs with just a single daily dose.
SkinMedica has recently launched a line just for men. You can see their products here.
