Your skin is constantly repairing and replacing itself. Because of this, you can be left with layers upon layers of dead skin. Exfoliating helps rid your body of these leftover dead skin cells, revealing healthier, brighter skin immediately after. Over-exfoliating your skin can cause skin damage though. Done too often, or too vigorously, you won’t just end up removing dead skin, you could also take off the top layer. This means leaving your skin open and inflamed, and exposed to bacteria and irritation, not to mention it’ll make breakouts more likely too.
Exfoliate Less
The first thing you should do when you realize you’ve over-exfoliated your skin is to hold off on exfoliating again for a while. Because you’ve caused trauma to the surface of your skin, giving it a rest to heal is one of the best things you can do for it. If you exfoliate four times a week for example and realize your skin is showing signs of over-exfoliation, take a break for two to three weeks so that your skin can recover before you start exfoliating again.
Avoid Irritation
When you over-exfoliate, your skin may show signs of inflammation and sensitivity. Avoid harsh skin care products such as acne products that could cause drying. Instead, opt for the gentlest cleansers when washing your face, so that you don’t continue to damage your skin.
Restore Balance
Restore the hydration and balance in your skin by choosing to apply nourishing and moisturizing (but also gentle) creams and lotions. Returning moisture to your face is vital if you have over-exfoliated, it will help repair and renew your skin while healing.
