5 Thing You Should Never Do to Your Skin

Aug 6, 2018 | Skin Care, Skin Care Tips

Skin care is a fairly simple matter of hygiene and routine, but there are a few common habits that make all dermatologists cringe. Here are 5 offenses that you should never, ever inflict upon your skin.

  1. Popping or picking

It’s easy to forget how delicate the skin actually is, and it’s hard to avoid the temptation of picking at a massive zit. skin-careUnfortunately, the more that you push, pick, and pop at acne, the worse it becomes. The rough treatment increases inflammation beneath the skin, and the bacteria from your fingers increases the chance of further breakouts. If you treat your skin kindly— avoid touching it without clean hands and resist picking pimples— you will be rewarded with much clearer skin.

  1. Over-exfoliating

Although exfoliating regularly provides incredible benefits for the skin by removing dead skin cells and clearing out pores, there is such a thing as too much exfoliation! When performed too vigorously and too frequently, exfoliation can harm your skin’s protective barrier. Exercise caution by exfoliating only once to twice a week with a gentle cleanser.

  1. Using alcohol as a cleanser

While alcohol is an effective sanitation ingredient, it should never be used for skin care. When alcohol is used as a skin cleanser, zit remover, or even as a disinfectant for cuts on the face, it strips the skin of the natural proteins and oils that keep bacteria and other irritants out. The result is increased risk of acne and sun damage.

  1. Not using sunscreen

The sun is largely responsible for the appearance of your skin as it ages. Even if you’re not worried about a few extra wrinkles and sun spots, just remember that the sun is a direct and frequent cause of skin cancer. Wearing sunscreen with a high SPF on a daily basis will go a long way in ensuring not only smoother skin but also long-term health.

  1. Always using the same skin products

You might have found a cleanser or a moisturizer that works perfectly on your skin, but the two of you probably won’t work harmoniously together, forever. There are many factors ranging from environmental conditions to changing hormones and stress levels that affect your skin, so it’s important to re-assess your skin products occasionally.
